NYS extends hemp growing season through 2021

New York State will continue its hemp growing season through 2021, after the federal government decided to delay new regulations that the state found "overly strict" and “unrealistic.”

Agriculture officials in New York say federal rules for producing hemp are “unrealistic.” The state also said they won’t try to regulate the crop. Hemp farmers say they will have to be very careful without support from the state.

The Seneca Nation has been vigorously working on a Hemp Production Plan to enter this new industry. It comes as the next step in an overall effort to revive agriculture on Seneca lands.

There are new guidelines from the federal government that could help hemp farmers in New York state expand their operations.

A $150 million hemp industrial park is open in Broome County. Ontario-based Canopy Growth will operate the park in Kirkwood. The hope is the business will create over 400 jobs.

A bill currently before Gov. Andrew Cuomo would regulate the sale of CBD products in New York State and set up new rules for the state’s growing hemp industry. Cuomo has not yet decided whether he’s going to sign it, potentially leaving what is now a legal gray area in limbo.

The product is hemp, and it’s been getting more hype lately for various types of industrial and consumer uses.

Jennifer McCauley is a brand manager with FIFCO USA, formerly known as North American Breweries, the company that owns Genesee.

She says they are launching a new hemp-style flavored malt beverage, called  Hemptails that is made with organic, sterilized hemp seeds.

It is no secret Gov. Andrew Cuomo has been pushing for New York to invest more in hemp production and processing. On Wednesday, agriculture leaders are meeting at Cornell University's Ithaca campus in hopes of building upon early investments from the state.

Could hemp be million-dollar crop in NYS?

The recently-passed state budget eliminates a cap on New York’s burgeoning industrial hemp industry. That will allow more farmers to be able to research, grow and process a crop that could turn into a million-dollar business.

An expansion of industrial hemp farming was one of Governor Cuomo’s proposals at his regional State of the State address in Syracuse. The proposal comes the same week the state allots more money to fight drug addiction.

A pair of New York State lawmakers are proposing a bill that would legalize the growing of industrial hemp for research purposes.
