January 27 marks UN Holocaust Remembrance Day. In Buffalo, one of the events marking the upcoming occasion is a scheduled visit by an author who has published a book about a Polish resistance fighter who sought to gather intelligence about the Auschwitz concentration camp complex by infiltrating it.

The Holocaust Resource Center of Buffalo will host a free teacher training Wednesday featuring an expert from Yad Vashem, the World Holocaust Remembrance Center in Jerusalem.

Holocaust Center joins alarm about hate crimes

In recent months, there has been a surge in reported hate speech - on Jews, Hispanics, Muslims, African Americans, women and members of the LGBTQ community. Now an international group of 90 organizations, including the Holocaust Center of Buffalo, plus 71 Holocaust scholars and educators have signed on to a statement condemning such intolerance.

They lit six candles in somber remembrance of the 6 million Jews who died during the Holocaust. Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz and Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown joined members of the Jewish Federation of Greater Buffalo in proclaiming the week of May 1 a week of remembrance of Holocaust victims.
