In the long debate about who in Buffalo is benefiting from the major economic boom, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development says the Niagara District is and the South District isn't.

The regional head of HUD says residents of government-subsidized housing deserve better than they are getting, During a recent visit, Lynne Patton expressed hope new management will bring improvement to the Buffalo Municipal Housing Authority.

Congressman Brian Higgins is calling on the Inspector General of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to investigate the Buffalo Municipal Housing Authority. Higgins says the authority is grossly mismanaged.


Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson wants Americans living on housing assistance to put more of their income toward rent and he wants to give public housing authorities the ability to impose work requirements on tenants.

Under current law, most tenants who get federal housing assistance pay 30 percent of their adjusted income toward rent, and the government kicks in the rest up to a certain amount.

New York Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand have announced the state's receipt of federal grant money to fight homelessness.

Marquan Ellis was evicted from his home in Las Vegas, Nevada when he was 18.

His mother battled with a drug and gambling addiction while he stayed at his godmother's house. But he couldn't stay there forever.

He found his way to the Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth where he enrolled in the independent living program.

The Trump administration's new budget blueprint aims to quantify the president's nationalistic agenda in dollars and cents. The plan, released Thursday morning, calls for significant increases in military and border-security spending, along with corresponding cuts in many other parts of the government.

Retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson has been confirmed as the secretary of Housing and Urban Development, by a 58-41 Senate vote.

Six Democrats and one Independent joined with the Republicans to approve the nomination — mostly Democrats who are up for re-election next year and represent states that voted for President Trump, NPR's Arnie Seipel reports.

"Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, who received blowback from liberals for voting for Carson in committee, voted against his nomination today," Arnie says.

President-elect Donald Trump has chosen Dr. Ben Carson to lead the Department of Housing and Urban Development in his incoming administration.

"Ben Carson has a brilliant mind and is passionate about strengthening communities and families within those communities," Trump said in a statement released Monday. "We have talked at length about my urban renewal agenda and our message of economic revival, very much including our inner cities."

The Obama administration has issued a sweeping final rule banning smoking in all public housing units nationwide, extending a smoke-free environment to nearly a million units.

Public and elected officials were among those celebrating the success of a senior housing complex on Buffalo's East Side Friday, a building that will soon reach 100% capacity.

City Comptroller Mark Schroeder says "the gloves are now off" in a dispute with the Brown administration over delays in the disbursement of federal housing rehab loans.
