As people skated, rode ice bikes and engaged in spirited games of curling, the scene had to put smiles on faces of regional marketers who have been working to make Canalside a year-round destination.

Officials at CanalsideĀ are hoping the weather cooperates as the popular waterfront destination prepares to host a grand opening of its winter activity season on Saturday.

Just because ice skating season is over, it doesn't mean all is quiet at Canalside. Events for the spring are currently in the works by the Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation, which includes plans for horse-drawn carriage rides for Easter.

The Ice at Canalside opened for its second winter season Monday. Some new amenities are available this year for visitors who want to stay warm or do some shopping.

The Ice at Canalside has exceeded expectations, says Sam Hoyt, board member forĀ  the Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation Board. "It appears that our final numbers will be in excess of 50,000 skaters," Hoyt said. Public skating for the facility's first season is scheduled to end on Tuesday.

The opening weekend for Buffalo's newest downtown attraction drew thousands of people and it appears many more will visit the Ice at Canalside over the holiday break if warm temperatures don't get in the way.
