Buffalo's Zoning Board of Appeals is used to protesting opponents of projects and the zoning variances needed to build so many of them. On Wednesday, a large group of carpenter union members showed up to protest the variances for a signature project on Jefferson Avenue.

The gears have started turning on a long awaited project on Buffalo's East Side. Local leaders announced the start of construction on a $31 million dollar affordable housing project Wednesday afternoon. Two mixed-use buildings will be constructed over the next year and a half on Jefferson Avenue.

While the retail neighborhoods in the Elmwood Village, in South Buffalo and along Hertel Avenue have been well-established for years, the merchants on Jefferson Avenue are looking to gain similar traction. Many of the merchants are hoping the spirit of Small Business Saturday will kick start a happy holiday business season.

The next step for a major housing development on Buffalo's East Side is now concrete and steel. Buffalo's Common Council approved the final stage of a $31 million People Inc. project on Jefferson Avenue.
