The latest New York State Labor Department figures put the Buffalo area's jobless rate at 4.5% in March, its lowest level in nearly 30 years. With workers harder to find and a push on to legalize marijuana in New York, some employers may stop drug testing in order to fill open positions.

The FBI hosted an employment workshop on Buffalo's East Side Thursday, as it looks to further diversify its workforce. 

People from the community and people who have just finished courses in Buffalo public schools Adult Education Division are being invited to attend a job fair Wednesday in the Career Collegiate Institute in North Buffalo.

More than 70 companies, looking to hire veterans, took part in Thursday's "Hiring Our Heroes" event in Buffalo. It attracted more than 100 former military members and/or their spouses.

Though the Labor Department reports the lowest unemployment rate in nearly five years,  the turnout at a recent career fair indicates many Buffalo-area residents are still searching for a job.

The national numbers portray an improving employment picture, but the count of hundreds at a Wednesday job fair in Niagara Falls shows a gloomier, more desperate reality.

WBFO and AM970's Mark Leitner visited the fair and spoke with many of the attendees.

The day, perhaps, offered a microcosm of the nation's changing economy.

Even before the doors opened to the Buffalo Museum of Science lobby, hundreds were lined up outside hoping to be considered for positions that Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown says were promised by participating companies.

"The companies were kind enough to guarantee collectively that they would be employing more than 1,200 people," said Brown.  "1,200-plus people that come to this job fair, that I've organized and put together with the help of these great employers, will find employment."

The participants included retail, healthcare, hospitality and banking companies.
