Lake Effect Snow Warning

An inch or two of new snow could impact Buffalo and the surrounding area today. That modest snow total, however, could make for treacherous driving conditions as strong winds whip up blowing snow later today. The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for Northern Erie, Niagara, Orleans and Genesee Counties. Additionally, a lake effect snow warning is in place for Southern Erie, Wyoming, Cattaraugus and Chautauqua Counties.

After a lull Saturday, more lake effect snow is heading our way. Narrow bands of heavy lake snow will intensify Sunday afternoon.

A lake effect snow warning remains in affect until 7 p.m. Sunday for Southern Erie, Chautauqua and Cattauraugus counties. A commercial traffic ban has been placed on the I-90 in both directions between Lackawanna and the Pennsylvania state line.

A Lake Effect Snow Warning has been issued for Southern Erie, Wyoming, Cattaraugus and Chautauqua Counties. Steve Welch of the National Weather Service says some locales could see more than a foot of snowfall by Friday night.

A Lake Effect Snow Warning has been issued for Erie and Genesee Counties, from 1 p.m. today through 1 a.m. Thursday. Tony Ansuini of the National Weather Service expects heavy snow and strong winds will make for a difficult afternoon commute.

The region's residents know very well the possibilities of lake effect snow, which can pile up quickly in some areas while other locales receive very little precipitation.  Dave Thomas of the National Weather Service says that will be the case in the coming days. As three feet of snow hits areas to the south, Buffalo and its northern suburbs should see only a dusting of snow.

A Lake Effect Snow Warning will remain in effect into the evening hours tonight for Chautauqua and Cattaraugus Counties, but Aaron Reynolds, meteorologist at the National Weather Service,  tells WBFO News that the rest of the area will see minimal snows today, and mild weather could be the trend for the near future.
