Fifty years ago today, Robert F. Kennedy succumbed to the gunshot wounds he suffered one day before, wounds inflicted by an assassin who shot him just moments after Kennedy finished a victory speech at the Democratic Presidential Primary in California. The tragedy shook countless Americans including many in Buffalo, who recalled their memories of RFK, including his visit to Buffalo four years prior as a candidate for US Senate.

New Erie County Democratic Committee Chairman Jeremy Zellner isn't wasting any time getting comfortable with his new title.

On his second day on the job, Zellner is heading to Albany today for the state's Democratic Committee meeting. But he has no plans to meet with Governor Andrew Cuomo, who has been pushing for a new leader in the county.

"It's important that our county is represented at our meeting," Zellner said. "It was a last-minute decision. I really haven't set up any meetings."

The chief of staff for County Legislature Democrats defeated Cheektowaga Democratic Chair Frank Max in a vote of some 1000 committee members Saturday at the Hearthstone Manor in Depew.

The 34-year-old Zellner, a City of Tonawanda resident, replaces Len Lenihan, who is retiring after leading County Democrats for the past decade.

The Democratic National Convention begins tonight in Charlotte, North Carolina, with most of the party's political operatives expected to attend, but the head of Erie County's Democrats, Len Lenihan, won't be  making the trip.

While conventions can be fun and he's been to some, the Erie County boss is more concerned about the election next week, with some key local races on the ballot.

That includes races like the Senate fight between County Legislature Chair Betty Jean Grant and State Senator Tim Kennedy.

After helping to place a Democrat in the County Executive's office for the first time in 12 years, Len Lenihan is stepping aside as the Chair of the Erie County Democratic Party.

In a letter penned Monday, Lenihan announced that he will not seek a sixth term in September.

The letter also recounted the party's recent successes, including the election of Democrats in the area's three Congressional seats and the current 12-to-3 "supermajority" held by Democrats in the Erie County Legislature.
