The Toronto Blue Jays' highly-anticipated first game in its temporary home ballpark comes Tuesday evening. On the eve of the first pitch, Blue Jays officials explained some of the changes and realignments within Sahlen Field in order to accommodate big league ballplayers safely in an ongoing pandemic.

Erie County leaders held a conference call Thursday with representatives of the Buffalo Bisons, Toronto Blue Jays and Major League Baseball to discuss ground rules for when Buffalo is scheduled to begin serving as the Blue Jays' temporary home. That meeting left local leaders feeling good about the measures in place to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in Buffalo. But then a short while later, the Jays announced their weekend games were postponed.

After much rumor, pleading, and competing reports, the Toronto Blue Jays will officially play in Buffalo. The Major League affiliate of the Buffalo Bisons will call Sahlen Field its home, once the Buffalo ballpark is made ready.

Although Major League Baseball officials have not confirmed it, numerous published reports suggest a plan is under consideration to shuffle minor league affiliations and player development models. More than 40 minor league clubs, including four in New York State, would lose their affiliations and, most likely, their futures.

The union representing Major League Baseball players has come out in support of workers at the New Era Cap Company plant in Derby, which is slated for closure next month.

Angry trade unionists and politicians were outside New Era Cap's headquarters on Delaware Avenue in downtown Buffalo Monday, protesting the company plan to close its plant in Derby and move most production to China.
