If you look at local job ads, there are usually pages of open jobs but an acute shortage of people with needed skills. The Northland Workforce Training Center is ramping up its recruitment for skills training.

There were 800 people registered for the Panasonic job fare Wednesday evening at the Buffalo Employment and Training Center - and more than that came to fill out forms and present resumes - as the company plans 150 hires by the end of August.

Across Western New York, the list of plants that have closed is very long and getting longer. Those were good jobs and many paid well, well enough to support making life and a family possible. Tulip Molded Plastics just opened a newly renovated plant in Niagara Falls that is keeping its current workforce but finding it difficult to find more employees.

Manufacturers in New York state expanded more quickly in December than in November, driven by a big jump in new orders.  That is the latest from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.
