Buffalo's economic resurgence appears to be passing by a large swath of the region's population. According to the United Way's recent Community Report Card, 41 percent of Erie County households are experiencing "financial hardship." Michael Weiner, President and CEO of the United Way of Buffalo & Erie County, says better-paying jobs are available in the area, but skills and connections are lacking among the region's workforce.

A new initiative is underway to help reduce poverty in the city of Buffalo. The state is providing $1.4 million to launch THRIVE Buffalo.

Along with being one of the poorest cities in the nation, Buffalo has an 11.4 percent pre-term birth rate, the highest in New York State.  A program that works to help high-risk pregnancies, Go Buffalo Mom, has received a $468,000 federal grant to fund that effort.

United Way sets ambitious 2013 campaign goal

The United Way of Buffalo and Erie County kicked off its annual campaign drive Thursday.  The organization has announced an ambitious fundraising goal.

The local chapter of the United Way says it raised just over $14 million dollars in its just-concluded 2012-2013 campaign, an increase of more than three percent from last year.

The United Way of Buffalo and Erie County has exceeded its yearly campaign goal for the first time since 2002. 

The more than $13,568,000 in pledges for 2011 announced today by United Way officials represents a two-percent increase over the amount raised last year. 

United Way president Michael Weiner says he is grateful for the way the community responded.
