"A Woman's Work: The NFL's Cheerleading Problem"

It was 2014 when a group of former Buffalo Jills filed a lawsuit seeking compensation against their managers, the Buffalo Bills and the NFL. The Jills have not performed since, but the lawsuit remains active in a battle over fair pay and employment practices.

Friday evening at Buffalo's North Park Theatre, that struggle comes to the big screen in a new film called "A Woman's Work: The NFL's Cheerleading Problem." WBFO's Marian Hetherly talked with the director, Yu Gu, who will be at the showing to answer questions from the audience.

Movies about hope have been around since the image started moving on a screen. Now there is a new local film about hope and children undergoing major medical treatment.

You have heard about films like "The True Adventures of Wolfboy" and "Marshall" being shot in Buffalo recently. Saturday night, Turner Classic Movies comes to North Park Theatre for a showing of "The Natural," which was filmed in the summer and fall of 1983 around several iconic Buffalo locations.

Storytellers, singers, filmmakers and colorful troubadours will shine a spotlight on the Erie Canal tonight at a special event in North Buffalo.

When Ahava Raba performs Sunday night at the North Park Theatre, it will be the culmination of 15 months of effort. The goal, according Cantor Penny Myers of Temple Beth Zion, is "to create a program that bridges the liberal Jewish community with the orthodox Jewish community to provide entertainment that did not revolve around the Holocaust or death."

The presidential debate drew a good crowd to the North Park Theatre Monday night. Judging by those who were willing to talk afterwards, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton won the debate.

The North Park Theater was packed Thursday night for a town hall meeting on the heroin and prescription opioid epidemic. The meeting was sponsored by Save the Michaels of the World, an organization formed to deal with the over-prescription of drugs following the death of 21-year-old Michael Israel.

The North Park, the landmark theater marquee on Hertel Avenue, is about a month away from being lighted again.


The operator of the historic North Park Theatre in Buffalo says it will cease operating the Hertel Avenue cinema as of June 6. But the theatre may not be closed for very long.
