The fight for a control of the State Senate will be intense this year, and Democrats are hoping to pick up seats. Republicans, who are currently in the majority, say they intend to remain in control of the chamber. Karen DeWitt sat down with the Senator leading the Democrats’ campaign efforts, Senator Michael Gianaris. The Democrat from Queens also discusses why he’s decided not to run for Attorney General.

The New York State Senate is experiencing its worst gridlock in nine years, with the two major factions tied at 31 members each. No legislation is moving through the chamber, but there’s lots of finger-pointing.

Even before the results of two special elections Tuesday in the State Senate were decided, the lone Democratic Senator who caucuses with the Republicans says he’s sticking with the GOP. That means Democrats will likely not control the Senate any time this year.
