The declining New York State Senate Republican conference could get even smaller after three Senators announced that they are not running for reelection in 2020. More exits are expected in the coming weeks.

There was joy in the air Tuesday, as State Republican Chair Ed Cox and Erie County Republican Chair Nick Langworthy reflected on what they called a great election year for the GOP and an opportunity to change politics - in New York and nationally under President-Elect Donald Trump.

NY Senate Democrats now have 32 votes in the chamber, which under normal circumstances would mean they hold the majority. But in the state Senate, it’s more complicated than that.

Western New Yorkers are going to the polls for what is expected to be a lightly attended primary election. A hotly contested race for Erie County District Attorney is on the ballot, along with State Senate, Assembly and judicial delegates.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who has offered only lukewarm support in the past for his fellow Democrats in their quest to take over the state Senate, said this week that he would back Democratic candidates in Senate races. He also somewhat reluctantly offered support to his former primary rival, Zephyr Teachout, who is now running for Congress.

New York State Senator Tim Kennedy of Buffalo was visibly emotional about it, talking with reporters. By a vote of 30-29, the state Senate this week rejected an attempt to force a vote on legislation aimed at eliminating the statute of limitations on child sexual abuse charges. However, the Buffalo Democrat vowed "this is not the end of the conversation."

The New York State Senate has passed four bills that sponsors say are part of its ongoing commitment to address the  ongoing heroin and opioid crisis.

Eight years after the stock market crash and the start of the Great Recession, the State’s Senate Leader say it’s time to get rid of a law that limits funding to some schools. The measure was created when the state had a $10-billion-dollar budget deficit, now, the state is running  surpluses.

North Tonawanda Mayor Robert Ortt says he'll make a decision soon on whether he will run for the State Senate seat being vacated by George Maziarz.  But there are already a couple of other candidates in the running.
