Hoping to avoid a repeat of the flooding which caused extensive property damage and forced an economically important beach to close two years ago, Governor Andrew Cuomo joined state and local officials in Niagara County Wednesday morning to discuss the strategy for holding back the rising waters of Lake Ontario.

Public safety advisory for Olcott Beach

The Niagara County Department of Health has issued a beach advisory at Olcott Beach, located in Olcott, and is expected to remain in effect until further notice.

For the fishing and tourism Village of Olcott on the Lake Ontario shore, Sunday was an opportunity to recover from the terrible weather of recent weeks.

Niagara County is still in a state of emergency. On Saturday, Niagara County firefighters along with other volunteers joined the Olcott Fire Company in an effort to combat rising waters along Lake Ontario.

When a volunteer fire company in a small rural town is dire need of funding to replace an aging fire truck, snaring state funding is often essential.

Krull Park in Olcott has been named the second most favored park in America.

In a contest sponsored by Coca Cola, Krull Park earned 21 million votes and was awarded a $50,000 prize.

A park in Alabama earned first place honors.

Olcott Beach in the Town of Newfane and Hastings, Ontario have become fishing meccas over the years.  Now, both communities want to take it a step further by securing the title of Ultimate Fishing Town, an honor bestowed by the Canada-based World Fishing Television Network. 

To win the title, Olcott and Hastings have to finish number one in online balloting.  So far, the two communities are way ahead of the competition.  Communities that finish first in the balloting can each win $25,000.
