Allegations of child sexual abuse against a priest in the Diocese of Buffalo have been substantiated.

Buffalo Catholic Diocese priests met Tuesday with Bishop Richard Malone and diocesan lawyers to talk about the continuing sex abuse scandal. WBFO's Mike Desmond spoke with several of them outside Christ the King Seminary in East Aurora.

Pope Francis, for the first time, acknowledged the sexual abuse of nuns by priests and bishops, including a case in which some clergy used women as sex slaves. He said on Tuesday that he is committed to ending the problem in the Roman Catholic Church.

Many have voiced the opinion that giving more laity - and, specifically, women - positions of leadership in the Catholic Church would help avoid sexual abuse scandals like the one now consuming the faith and its faithful. In the Buffalo diocese, there are a series of positions open to lay people, but ultimate power always remains with clergy. Even so, one empowering model may light the way to the future.

Buffalo's Bishop Richard Malone says comes away from the meeting of U.S. bishops in Baltimore "astonished, shocked and dismayed" that action was not taken on priest abuse. However, he believes the Vatican's postponement may be because of the global nature of the crisis.

Last week was full with back-and-forth between those defending the church and others calling for reform. Monday afternoon may be pivotal, as Bishop Richard Malone is scheduled to personally address diocesan priests and the media in separate meetings.

The Catholic Diocese of Buffalo is eliminating its television production unit. Daybreak TV Productions will cease operations next month. Eight staff members of the unit will be laid off.

Two local priests have been placed on administrative leave following complains of abuse.
