In his lifetime, journalist and author Roland Martin says African Americans have made a lot of progress, but there remains a long way to go. Martin spoke at Canisius College Tuesday at the 50th anniversary celebration of the Afro-American society.

In 1967, over 100 cities, large and small, exploded in fire and violence, the result of decades of discrimination against black populations in places like Cleveland, Nashville, Boston and Newark. The biggest riot at the time was in Detroit. After five days of rioting, 33 blacks and 10 whites were dead and property damage totaled more than $100 million.

When Ruby Bridges was five years old, she was the only student in her New Orleans school because a judge had ordered the school integrated and white parents pulled out all of their children. The woman who was the subject of a legendary Norman Rockwell painting going to school guarded by white U.S. Marshals spoke at Niagara University Wednesday evening.

The race for the 27th Congressional District continues to draw attention by both major parties.

What began as a fight over the Buffalo Police Department traffic checkpoints is turning into a major probe of the police department by the state attorney general's office.

The number of hate crimes reported last year rose by 4.6 percent compared to the previous year, according to data released Monday by the FBI.

The total tally of hate crimes in 2016 was 6,121, compared to 5,850 in 2015. More than half of those incidents were motivated by the victim's race.

The FBI statistics are based on voluntary reporting by nearly 16,000 local law-enforcement agencies. Civil-rights groups, however, say the figures are deeply flawed because of what they say is systemic under-reporting.

The NAACP has issued a travel advisory for the state of Missouri, citing recent "race-based incidents" and new state legislation that makes it harder for fired employees to prove racial discrimination.

It's the first time the national civil rights organization has issued a travel warning for an entire state, the Kansas City Star reports.

The group warns "African American travelers, visitors and Missourians" to "exercise extreme caution" in the state.

Carefully avoiding saying the words "Donald Trump," education activists Tuesday night said they are standing up for all children, no matter their race, origin, gender or national origin. The event was at Lafayette High School, where leaders reaffirmed safety, acceptance and diversity.

The Adirondacks in upstate New York is one of the biggest tourist destinations in the U.S., with millions traveling to the small towns each year.

But troubling racial incidents in the Adirondacks this summer have sparked conversations among some visitors and experts in the tourism industry who say that people of color do not always feel welcome or safe there. Brian Mann of Here & Now contributor North Country Public Radio reports.
