This spring's weather has appeared to be a bit on the damp side, with  a number of cool rainy days over the past month.

Erie County is learning the cost of these increasingly common very heavy rains. The water has to go somewhere and if there isn't drainage, it might wash away a road or cause some other problem.

East Aurora sinkhole causes public safety emergency

East Aurora is dealing with a public safety emergency, as a sinkhole opened up on a major roadway because of this weekend's rain.

In Houston, reservoirs swollen by rain from Hurricane Harvey were opened early Monday, a move that was expected to flood more homes — but one that the Army Corps of Engineers says is needed to limit the scope of the disaster that's threatening lives and property in Texas.

Heavy rains caused flash flooding along a number roadways across Erie County. The National Weather Service reports 2.29 inches of rain fell Thursday, breaking the old record of 1.86 inches in 1956. WBFO News has team coverage of the flooding.

POSTED 12:30 p.m.: Flash flooding has closed roads and damaged area buildings around Western New York. Buffalo Fire reported a number of swift water recoveries at underpasses, as motorists were urged to use caution with and not drive through rising waters.

Flooding has been reported in parts of the Northtowns and Lockport Friday afternoon. Heavy rains from a slow moving thunderstorm dumped as much as three inches of rain in a short period of time.
