A group of parents is suing New York state in an effort to reinstate a religious exemption to vaccine mandates.

The state Assembly narrowly approved a measure to remove the religious exemption for vaccinations in the wake of a severe measles outbreak that began in communities with a high percentage of unvaccinated children in New York and is steadily spreading to other states.

A freshman state lawmaker from Western New York is co-sponsoring legislation to remove a vaccine exemption. WBFO's senior reporter Eileen Buckley talked Assemblyman Pat Burke about why he’s supporting the bill that calls for a change in the law.

Two teenagers, who are not vaccinated because of religious beliefs, were kicked out of school. WBFO's senior reporter Eileen Buckley says now the mother of the teens is suing the Orchard Park School District.
