There is going to be a change at the top in the state’s Republican Party. Erie County GOP Chair Nick Langworthy has gathered the support of the majority of county chairs and will be replacing Ed Cox In July. The two met with the media Tuesday to talk about the transition.

There is a shift in the political makeup of the Erie County Legislature after longtime Republican Kevin Hardwick announced Tuesday that he will be caucusing with the Legislature's Democrats, as of Jan. 1.

Both major political parties hold their state conventions later this week. The Democrats and the Republicans are holding their events simultaneously, on May 23 and 24, with the Republicans in New York City and the Democrats in Long Island.

An increasing percentage of Americans say they have no religious affiliation in a society that traditionally has been religious. A University at Buffalo political scientist is part of a group of researchers who have been looking at that in the context of politics, with the heavy involvement of the religious right and the Republican party.

As Marc Molinaro brings his campaign for governor to Western New York for the first time Wednesday, he's being greeted with criticism from a local leader. Former Erie County Executive Joel Giambra, a Reform Party gubernatorial candidate, labeled Molinaro as  "the right-wing Conservative-Republican candidate who's supported by the NRA."

Central New York Republican State Sen. John DeFrancisco has been traveling around upstate meeting with members of his party to discuss the possibility of him running for governor next year. DeFrancisco said there is discontent with Gov. Andrew Cuomo on both sides of the aisle.

House Speaker Paul Ryan had a successful fund-raiser last night, sponsored by Congressman Chris Collins. While he did not speak publicly during the brief visit, he reportedly raised $250,000.

A Republican appears poised to become the first to officially announce his candidacy in this year's race for governor. After weeks of speculation, Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino Wednesday will begin what most believe will be an uphill climb, against Governor  Andrew Cuomo.
