The University of Rochester Medical Center and Rochester Regional Health are once again involved in national COVID-19 research. The two healthcare institutions are running tests on a vaccine that could help fight against the so-called South African variant.

True allergic reactions to vaccinations are extremely rare, but two local women did experience this after receiving their first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. Allergists at Rochester Regional Health were able to safely administer their second vaccine doses by following a special procedure.

Rochester Regional Health has received a federal contract to study ear infections. Michael Pichichero, the Rochester General Hospital doctor who will oversee the research, said the results could have national implications.
