The Senate and Assembly approved anti-sexual harassment measures that, among other things, ends the standard that harassment needs to be “severe or pervasive” in order for a victim’s complaint to receive redress. Gov. Andrew Cuomo will sign the bill.

The New York State Senate voted 33-29 to allow undocumented immigrants to receive standard driver’s licenses. Gov. Andrew Cuomo raised some last-minute objections, saying he fears some data the state Department of Motor Vehicles collects on the immigrants might be accessed by the federal government and immigration officials. However, late in the evening, the governor signed the bill.

Republicans and Democrats will split control of Congress next year. House Democrats are projected to pick up enough GOP-held seats to take the majority in the House, according to The Associated Press. Senate Republicans are projected to maintain and perhaps expand their majority.

The results create a divided Capitol Hill next year and mean President Trump's plans for new tax cuts, tougher immigration legislation and changes to the Affordable Care Act will be blocked.

Sen. Tim Kennedy (D-Buffalo) rolled to an easy victory against challenger Shaqurah Zachery Thursday, locking up another seat in the Democratic push to take the State Senate. It also puts the senior South Buffalo Democrat in position for a major post in a Democratic Senate.

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand can expect a strong political assault in her re-election campaign against Republican, Conservative and Reform candidate Chele Farley, The challenger made her first visit locally Thursday.

The Senate on Thursday confirmed Gina Haspel as CIA director, making her the first woman to lead the spy agency, despite the controversy surrounding her role in the waterboarding program.

The Senate vote of 54-45 in favor of Haspel came mostly along party lines. She needed support from several Democratic senators to win confirmation.
