Western New York's winter weather appears ready to live up to its severe reputation over the coming days. 

Snow and some of the coldest temperatures "in years" will arrive in Western New York tonight, according to the National Weather Service.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for southern Erie, Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, Wyoming and Allegany counties for Friday and Saturday.  A winter weather advisory is posted for northern Erie, Niagara, Orleans and Genesee counties.

Local skiers and snowboarders have received good news.

In light of the dearth of measurable snow around most of the region, Holiday Valley announced its winter season opening on Saturday. The resort has been making snow to provide what Mother Nature has not. Access to the hills is limited with only four slopes and three lifts open at the moment.

Visitors to the resort will also have the amenities of a new lodge to enjoy.

The City of Buffalo is equipped and ready for the snow.  That was the message delivered this morning by mayor Byron Brown and public works commissioner Steve Stepniak at the Broadway barn, where officials conducted their annual inspection of the city's snow-cleaning vehicles.

Stepniak says every plow and salter hitting the streets this winter will be equipped with global positioning system equipment so crews back at the base can track the trucks' progress.
