Strong Museum

The National Toy Hall of Fame at the Strong Museum inducted some longtime favorites during a ceremony Thursday.

The class of 2019 includes the collectible card game Magic the Gathering, Matchbox cars, and the coloring book.

Christopher Bensch, vice president for collections for the Strong, said the newest honorees were chosen from a group of finalists that included My Little Pony, Jenga, Nerf Blaster, Masters of the Universe, Care Bears, Fisher-Price Corn Popper, the top, the game Risk, and the smartphone.

You don’t often see groundbreaking ceremonies led by children wearing hard hats, riding in on toy construction vehicles.

But that’s exactly how the Strong National Museum of Play broke ground Thursday on a 100,000 square foot expansion. That expansion will bring a new, larger atrium and entrance to the museum and include new exhibits like women in gaming, a ropes course, updated outdoor play area and parking garage.

The National Toy Hall of Fame at The Strong Museum has revealed the list of a dozen finalists for this year's inductees.

They are: bubble wrap, Care Bears, Clue, coloring books, Dungeons & Dragons, Fisher-Price Little People, Nerf, pinball, Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots, swing, Transformers, and Uno.

The museum recognizes toys that have delighted multiple generations, inspiring them to learn, create and discover through play.

If  bubble wrap is selected for the hall, it would join the cardboard box and stick among unconventional honorees.
