Suicide

It was 2012 when University at Buffalo researcher and retired New York State Trooper John Violanti published one of the first studies to test - and find - the connection between stress and suicide in the Buffalo Police Department. His five-year study of 464 BPD officers found a higher percentage of chronic mental and physical health problems than the general population, including a 50% higher rate of suicide. The study is worth revisiting, as two major police departments are grappling with self-inflicted deaths.

Every year more than 44,000 people die by suicide. Can education and voluntary outreach protect gun owners from the high suicide risk?

We reported Monday that two-thirds of gun deaths in the U.S. are the result of suicide. More than 21,000 Americans take their lives using a firearm every year. That's much higher than the number of homicides or deaths by mass shootings.

White men in small towns are most at risk.

When we talk about gun violence in the United States, we usually look at homicides, urban crime and mass shootings. But two-thirds of gun deaths in America don’t involve bad guys with guns. They’re caused by suicide, by people deliberately harming themselves. Even many pro-gun activists say that has to change.

A simple phone call can reduce suicide risk

The latest numbers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show suicide rates continuing to climb nationwide. In New York, the CDC found that the rate has risen almost 30 percent since 1999.

People who have gone to the emergency room once for an attempted suicide are at high risk for attempting it again after their release.

Now, a study has shown a straightforward way of reducing that risk: calling those patients.
