A new teacher residency program that aims to boost educational opportunities for all students by preparing and supporting diverse educators officially kicked off this week.

SUNY Buffalo State has been selected to play lead a new initiative to increase faculty diversity.  WBFO's senior reporter Eileen Buckley says the college was selected for a pilot program called PRODI-G by SUNY.

The lack of teacher diversity in Buffalo and Erie County will be presented Thursday evening in a town hall forum.  The Education Trust - New York is hosting the event along with WNED/WBFO and the Center for Urban Education at Canisius College.  WBFO's senior reporter Eileen Buckley says having a teacher of color could be make a big difference for a  student’s education experience.

A new "grow your own" style program will help build a diverse workforce of Buffalo Public School teachers. SUNY Buffalo State and the Buffalo Public School District announced the launch the Urban Teacher Academy to be located at McKinley High School Monday at a news conference.

As minority students become a majority in public schools, there are still disproportionate numbers of minority teachers in the classroom. WBFO's senior reporter Eileen Buckley asked two top state education leaders about trying to attract more students of color to consider the teaching profession.
