Anna Howard is seeking answers for the death her son, Mikey Frears.

“I just want justice for my son,” she said.

By the account of friends and family, Frears was a physically healthy man of 27. How he ended up dead last week inside the Erie County Holding Center has Howard and other friends and family seeking answers.

Erie County Sheriff Timothy Howard at times has said publicly he won’t enforce edicts from Albany he doesn’t agree with, like the SAFE Act gun control legislation and, more recently, Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s 10-person limit on Thanksgiving gatherings.

But to hear Steve Felano tell it, Howard hasn’t gone far enough.

For two-and-a-half years, the death of India Cummings has  raised questions. Cummings died after spending 17 days at the Erie County Holding Center. Thursday brought another protest outside the Holding Center, in the wake of a state report that said homicide should be listed as the woman's cause of death.

The Erie County Sheriff’s Office is adding another set of eyes to the streets as its patrol officers take part in a 60 day trial of body cameras. While Deputies will weigh the pros and cons of the cameras themselves, department officials are already considering other factors.


Whenever police are asked about where illegal guns come from, they talk about them coming in from other states with limited or no sales restrictions or sales at gun shows. They also talk about guns stolen after deaths or when the owner is in a hospital or nursing home. Now there is a push to make sure unguarded guns become guarded.

Why were three Erie County Holding Center inmates mistakenly released over the past few months?  Erie County Sheriff Timothy Howard went before the Legislature’s Public Safety Committee Tuesday to try to explain. 

In the latest incident a couple of weeks ago, a suspected car thief, Paris Williams, was freed from the Holding Center when another man whose last name is also Williams should have been released.
