2 Republicans announce their run for NY governor

Two Republicans have jumped into the race for New York governor.

A political analyst said the loss of Rep. Tom Reed as a potential candidate for New York governor is a tremendous blow to the Republican Party. Reed had been publicly entertaining the idea of running for governor in 2022, but he announced Sunday that he would seek no public office next year.

Rep. Tom Reed has responded to an allegation made by a former lobbyist in a Washington Post story that came out Friday. In a statement released early Sunday evening, Reed, a Southern Tier Republican from Corning who has been in Congress since 2010, announced that he will not run for any elected office in 2022.

The election in New York’s 23rd congressional district stretched through a summer of protests, violence at one campaign office and a pandemic. On election night, incumbent Tom Reed declared victory. His opponent hasn’t commented on that declaration, but shortly after the polls closed at 9 p.m., Tracy Mitrano reflected on her chances of victory.

Two of Western New York's federal representatives spoke against President Donald Trump's suggestion Thursday that, out of concern for the integrity of mail-in balloting, the November election should be postponed.

A New York state report released this week found that Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s controversial executive order, which placed COVID-19 hospital patients into nursing homes, was not to blame for the state’s more than 6,000 nursing home deaths. But, as WBFO’s Older Adults Reporter Tom Dinki found, many, including Republican lawmakers, watchdog groups and medical professionals, still have questions about what impact the order had.

An alliance of Republican lawmakers was in a Lockport heavy industry plant Tuesday pushing to reopen Western New York, as three regions of the state prepare to start opening later this week.

New York's two representatives in the United States Senate announced Tuesday a proposed bill that, if passed, would utilize the Defense Production Act to designate and put in charge an expert who would oversee the nation's distribution of medical supplies related to COVID-19. Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand say slow action by the White House has made it necessary to pursue what is called the Medical Supply Transparency and Delivery Act.

Negotiations are underway for a fourth phase of federal economic relief, and a Western New York member of the House of Representatives believes the bipartisan support will be there for a deal he anticipates will be worked out by mid May. Congressman Tom Reed wants that deal to include provisions that ensure local governments get needed aid with no interference by the state.
