Toronto International Film Festival

"Rapturous," "Soaring," "Masterful!" It's that time of year again when critics use their hyperbolic best to preview the fall's most anticipated films. Starting at the end of August, studios show their Oscar hopefuls to accredited press across a trinity of prestigious film festivals – Venice, Telluride, and Toronto – the last of which concluded on Sunday night.

As you read this, the NPR Movies team is settling into their seats in movie theaters across downtown Toronto. For the next week, we'll be sitting in those seats or ones very similar to them, in the dark, taking furious notes, as we each power through marathon sessions of movie-watching.

Some of the film industry's biggest producers and stars are not far from Buffalo this week, attending the Toronto International Film Festival. Some of them are being urged to check out this side of the border for their next project.

The Toronto International Film Festival starts Thursday. Over the years, the festival has become one of Hollywood's most important vehicles for launching new work and this year appears to be no exception.
