Usually, this would be the time when there are bonfires on the beaches on the Canadian shore of Lake Erie, traffic building on the Peace Bridge and people talking about Sherkston. Not this year.

The surging unemployment rate serves as a clear indicator of how the economy is suffering during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, it's just part of a story which has more chapters still to be written.

Before New York State ordered the shutdown of all bars and restaurants, concerns over the coronavirus were impacting the regional economy. According to Jim Fink of Business First, during just one day last week a major Buffalo hotel lost $80,000 in bookings due to cancellations. It's likely the tip of the iceberg for what will be mounting financial losses for area businesses.

Some say there's no better cure for cabin fever than snowmobiling. It's big business in New York State. Marketers in the state capital recently launched a campaign to promote winter tourism.

For most of the year, two ferries serve the village of Put-In-Bay, which sits on an island in Lake Erie. But in winter, ferry service stops and residents face a quieter, more isolated, lifestyle.


The Adirondacks in upstate New York is one of the biggest tourist destinations in the U.S., with millions traveling to the small towns each year.

But troubling racial incidents in the Adirondacks this summer have sparked conversations among some visitors and experts in the tourism industry who say that people of color do not always feel welcome or safe there. Brian Mann of Here & Now contributor North Country Public Radio reports.
