Diapers, wipes, sleep sacks, and formula are among more than a dozen items being asked for by the United Way of Buffalo and Erie County in this year’s Community Baby Shower. For the ninth year in a row, the organization is encouraging people to host their own collection events at home, at work, or out in the community.

Despite seeing the most fruitful period of economic development in recent history, many residents and areas in the City of Buffalo continue to struggle with poverty. As part of Governor Andrew Cuomo’s Empire State Poverty Reduction Initiative, both the United Way of Buffalo and Erie County, and the Community Foundation of Greater Buffalo will help the city create a work plan to change that.


About one third of kids in Erie County are either overweight or obese, according to a report issued by the United Way of Buffalo & Erie County. The organization's Community Report Card on Childhood Obesity also indicates a correlation between obesity and household income.

The United Way of Buffalo and Erie County has received a second round of funding to help students at Buffalo's Southside Elementary School and South Park High School.
