Nearly 10 years after the first NHL Winter Classic was played outdoors on New Era Field, the International Ice Hockey Federation is making similar history with today’s World Juniors Hockey Championship match between Team USA and Team Canada.

Buffalo's City Hall building appears front and center in the 2018 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship logo unveiled Friday. The big announcement, though, was that the outdoor game to be played at New Era Field, as part of the tournament, will be a matchup of hockey rivals Team USA and Team Canada.


A person familiar with the decision has told The Associated Press that USA Hockey has selected Buffalo to host the 2018 World Junior Championship tournament.

The CCM/USA Hockey All-American Prospects Game will take place at First Niagara Center in Downtown Buffalo Thursday. The game will feature some of the best young talent in the world, including top prospect John “Jack” Eichel.

USA Hockey bringing two world championships to Buffalo

USA Hockey announced Wednesday that Buffalo will host two world championships at the soon-to-be-completed HARBORCENTER in 2015. The 8th annual International Ice Hockey Federation Under-18 Women’s World Championship will be held next January and the International Paralympic Committee Ice Sledge Hockey Worlds will begin in April.

Top young hockey talent from across the nation will be playing in Buffalo the next two years. The Sabres and First Niagara Center will be hosting USA Hockey's All-American Prospects game in 2014 and 2015.
