Veterans and their advocates were celebrating the completion of updated, handicap-accessible restrooms at an American Legion post in Sloan Friday morning. But they looked back on a recent tragic fall at another local post. In light of that incident, Erie County Clerk Michael Kearns and the American Institute of Architects are announcing that an urgent assessment of handicap accessibility at other veteran posts is underway.

As the nation marks its annual observance of Flag Day, the Erie County Clerk's Office and the county's auto bureaus are launching the sale of flag-themed cards that will raise much-needed funds for local veteran posts and halls.

He was only 20 years old when Corporal Roy Fink went missing during combat in the Korean War. More than six decades later, his remains are finally back home in Buffalo and in their final resting place.

They provide a place for veterans to gather and bond, for members of the community to host social events and for private groups to celebrate special occasions such as wedding receptions. A bill introduced by a local Congressman aims to provide federal grants that would help veterans' posts and halls keep up with maintenance and needed repairs.

In the months between Memorial Day and Veterans Day, "Operation Evaluation" will take place in Erie County. State Assemblyman Michael Kearns says it's a survey that will help determine what upgrades outdated VFW and American Legion posts need to better serve veterans.
